"May I Introduce Myself and My Grandson?”
"My name is William Richard Wiseman and this is little Joe Garland, my grandson. I was born in St. James, London in 1849, and at the age of 4, I traveled west through Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming and then south into the Great Basin with my single mother, and here we pioneered, dug irrigation canals, cut timber and did our best to help the desert blossom as a rose. With my stepfather, William Wagstaff, I established a nursery and learned from him the art of being an orchardist–planting trees and growing apples, cherries, peaches and the like.
After my mother died (I was 17), I went to San Francisco on the new Union Pacific Railroad and saw the ocean, and on the way back, met a man aboard the train who parted with his Strativarius violin when I gave him a $20 goldpiece. I treasured it my whole life–learned to play it and entertained family and friend for years. I married and we had several children until my wife passed away from diptheria shortly after giving birth to our son, who died the next day. The following February, I lost another son from that wicked disease. Thanks to my son Bill and my great-grandson, I am sharing this with you today.
I wish I had written my memoir so that the hundreds of descendants who still live 100 years later could learn much more about my travels, troubles and triumphs.
My advice: Write your memoir – let your family know who you are and share with them what you learned. They will treasure your story! The book pictured here will help you get off to a good start (my great-grandson wrote it!).
What Can You Expect When Your Read "BRING YOUR MEMOIR TO LIFE?"
This small ebook will serve as a handy guide and checklist to help you get started preserving your memories. The author has more than a decade of experience helping people just like you gather, edit, collect and proof their personal or family memoir so it can be printed on demand using the latest technological tools available today. Many samples can be seen by visiting the website at www.preservationbooks.com; clients whom he has helped get their own books published share their experiences there, too.
In Chapter Two, the author helps the reader understand what a "memoir" is. and how it differs from a simple chronological life history. He notes that ..."The memoir makes no pretense of replicating a whole life. Indeed, one of the important skills of memoir writing is the selection of the theme ... that will bind the work together.” And, at the end of each of the 10 chapters, he gives you assignments to help you finally "get it done!”
"BRING YOUR MEMOIR TO LIFE" FOCUSES ON 3 PRIORITIES:
SET OBJECTIVES
From the beginning, GM Jarrard challenges the memoir writers to ask themselves, "What Do You Want Your Readers 1. TO KNOW, 2. TO FEEL, AND 3. TO DO?" He explains that THERE SHOULD BE SPECIFIC REASONS TO WRITE A MEMOIR, and he dedicates Chapter One to SETTING YOUR OBJECTIVES
ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
ESTABLISHING A ROUTINE is critical if you REALLY ARE COMMITTED to Bring Your Memoir to Life in 6 Weeks! So, like a Drill Sergeant he gives you a CHECKLIST to follow right from the beginning. Like baking a cake or following any recipe, he gives you a list of things to gather before you start mixing your ingredients.
FIND HELP
FINDING MENGTORS, COLLABORATORS & EXPERTS is also critical to meeting your 6-week deadline, especially if your focus goes beyond just your own personal experience and capabilities. The author spends part of one chapter asking you to identify "Cairns" ... people who served as markers on the trail of life who "kept you on the straight and narrow" or who helped you at a critical time in your life. He also advises you to find others who could share anecodotes or photos to help you "flesh out" your memoir.
IN THE BOOK, YOU WILL LEARN:
In Chapter One, the Author focuses your attention on KEY TASKS to complete each week, from DEFINING YOUR OBJECTIVES to COLLECTING DOCUMENTS & PHOTOS. Each week, there's a NEW TASK to accomplish.
If you're writing a memoir you can suffer from "writer's block" just like any author. Jarrard provides helps and hints to help you "fill in the blanks" when you get stuck and need a “push."
Then, you are guided on FOCUSING ON YOUR MAIN CHARACTER OR SUBJECT and finding KEY DETAILS. And he points out that the same classic elements used in fiction also apply to memoirs.
And, along the way, he gives you a checklist of things to include, such as KEY EVENTS, TRAITS, PHOTOS, ARTICLES or KEY EVENTS or DECISION POINTS the changes the course of a life.
